Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) Urges RI Govt To Sever Relations With China

Jakarta (ANTARA News) – About 100 people coordinated by the Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) demonstrated outside the Chinese embassy here Tuesday demanding a halt to violence against Muslim Uighurs in Xinjiang province.

“We also call on the Indonesian government to break off all cooperative relations with China in the political, economic and military fields because the Chinese have slaughtered Muslim Uighurs,” Farid Wajdi, a spokesman for the demonstrators, said.

He said the Indonesian government as the representative of Indonesia`s Muslim population should intervene in the events in Xinjiang where hundreds of Muslim Uighurs were killed.

“We reproach the Indonesian government for doing nothing to help the Muslim Uighurs whose human rights have clearly been abused,” Farid said.

The demonstrators also demanded that the Chinese government stop its violent and repressive actions against Muslim Uighurs who clashed with Han Chinese in Xinjiang recently.

They also demanded that the Chinese authorities release the Muslim Uighurs who were arrested, treat the wounded Muslim Uighurs and pay compensation for those killed.

Farid said the violence against Muslim Uighurs in Xinjiang province amounted to `genocide.” In 1936, there were 48 million Muslims in Xinjiang province but the number had now dropped to 10 million.

“Where have the 38 million Muslims in Xinjiang gone? This is really an effort to wipe out the ethnic Uighur population,” he said.

Asked whether HTI would urge world organizations like the United Nations to handle the conflict in Xinjiang, Farid said HTI did not have the slightest trust in the UN because the world body was most likely to support China in the matter.

Tightly watched by police, the demonstration did not cause a traffic jam in the street where the Chinese embassy is located.( Antara; Tuesday, 14 July 2009 18:25)
