Hizb Ut-Tahrir Demands Russia Release Members

Reports from Indonesia say about 200 supporters of the Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir have rallied outside the Russian Embassy in Jakarta, demanding the release of six of its members.

The protesters held signs and banners reading “Russian Regime Is Terrorist” or “Russia Fights Against Islam.”

Earlier this month, police in Moscow announced the arrest of six Hizb ut-Tahrir members, saying they were “leading active recruitment work in Moscow mosques.”

Police also said they had confiscated grenades, weapons, ammunition, and “extremist” literature in raids on the members’ homes.

In a statement, Hizb ut-Tahrir Indonesia called the accusation a “vicious fabrication by Russian agencies.”

Britain-based Hizb ut-Tahrir has been outlawed as a terrorist organization in Russia and other countries but is legal in Indonesia. Based on reporting by AFP  (www.rferl.org, November 29, 2012)
