HTI Press. Jakarta. While trying to find some ‘blank spots’ of other volunteer post in Rawa Buaya area, in a pickup the rescue team of HTI Jakarta left from Pasar Khilafah in Kosambi Cengkareng area to a location to build the temporary shelter for the victims.
They went along the 200-meter railway double track of Rawa Buaya to the location. Along the railway tracks, the team saw a lot of people setting up temporary tents on the tracks. They wore makeshift tents; plastic sheetings and that sort of things.
After walking along railway tracks, the team reached the boundary of Rawa Buaya. There were no shelters established by volunteers, except a few rented boats and some rented carts.
Then, the team began to feel the chill of the flooding water in Rawa Buaya; they steeped in thigh-high water for around 300-meter of walking. Next, Alhamdulillah, the team found the road which is rather high while the water was only knee-high. After almost 500 meters of walking, the team reached at the planned location – a mosque, a school building and a health center.
Stagnant water in the area was only 10 to 20cm high.. Before going to the mosque and the school building, the team coordinated with Ustadz Zaidan whose house was also submerged in around 40-cm water. We then went to mosque and the elementary school building.
After that, the team spoke with the school warden and was informed that there were about 400-500 refugees there. The evacuation site was only run by the local neighborhood, and no organizations or other institutions set up the shelters there.
Later on, after holding an intense conversation the team finally decided to set up a shelter there (in the schools and the mosque) by focusing on the stuffs prepared by the team namely generator to power electricity and pump water.
Alhamdulillah on that Friday night, January 18 at around 24.00, the electricity was back on. The next afternoon, the team supplied another generator. The prepared two generators brought light to the mosque and the school and the evacuation site, while the water was flowing again. Alhamdulillah. (rz) []
